You can teach a child to write, but you cannot make them love it. And that’s why we’re here – our mission is to bring real-world writing into the classroom, in order to excite, engage and motivate your pupils. Pupil Magazines is an online platform for primary and secondary schools across the UK, enabling them to host their very own, bespoke school magazine. We inspire pupils to get creative in their writing by allowing them to publish their content and share it with the world. Here are three reasons why your school should get involved today:
1. Showcase pupils' work and give them a chance to celebrate.
It’s important that pupils feel recognition for their achievements, and one of the best ways to do this is by showcasing the work they have produced in your pupil magazine. Whether it’s stories, poems or reports (or all three!), giving pupils a platform to showcase their writing can be a great way of encouraging pupils, and inspiring others to try their hand at writing too. Showcasing pupils’ work also allows you, as an English teacher, to use these examples as models: share the fantastic pieces that have been published in your own pupil magazine, and encourage pupils to use them in order to improve their own work.
2. Writing for a real-life audience will motivate and inspire
Pupils can also be inspired by writing for a real-life audience. Your pupil magazine will provide your students with a variety of opportunities to explore different genres, and ensure their work is read by an actual audience. Give your pupils an understanding of appropriate grammar and punctuation, and help them to use this in practice. Could they use an informal style and empathetic language in a ‘Dear Deirdre’-style Agony Aunt letter? Could they choose a more formal style and direct speech in a newspaper report? Or might they use persuasive arguments in a debate-style, opinionated film review? The opportunities are endless with your pupil magazine!
3. Skyrocket your pupils’ engagement in writing
Your pupil magazine is a great way to get your students engaged in writing. By giving them the chance to be published, pupils receive a sense of achievement and pride in their work. The work needs to be the best it can be before publication – and so this is a perfect opportunity to help children understand the importance of drafting, writing, publishing and editing their work – without it seeming meaningless, and, dare-I-say, boring! Involve students in every step of publishing their magazine, from planning through to design, production and promotion. This will ensure a better end product and give them ownership over what they create.
